It is easy to believe 5 min. or some hours. But when the expectancy prolongs for years then things change. Abraham had to maintain this conviction of having what he asked from God for decades and he did, (with some exceptions that are remarkable until today because the envy between Ishmael and Jacob is still visible), so he became the father of the believers. When we consider his experience the meaning of this verse becomes complete.
