Friendship with God is not a relation between two equals, but a relation between God and creature. Father – son. So, for having a relation like this with God and entering with Him in covenant, it is necessary to fear Him, to respect Him as God Father, and to love and obey Him. It is good for us to do that because He is working for our good.
