“In vain”, that is “for nothing”. The idea is not that a man will not be able to build a house if he doesn’t ask the help and the collaboration of God, but even if a man succeeds to build a house, to guard a city in a godless way, he will do this in vain or for nothing. The name of God is Yahvé, that means “I am the existence”, “I exist”, What or who is without Him is nothing. The idols, in the Bible are nothing, man without God is dead, things without God are designated to destruction. All that is built with God is for an everlasting purpose, and all that is made without Him is made for nothing.
